Nighttime Lights of the World (source of the image used in the banner of the USP2 website) The Nighttime Lights of the World dataset was compiled from 6 months of nighttime orbits (October 1994 - March 1995) collected during the dark half of the lunar cycle. Each orbit was examined for clouds using the thermal infrared band. Areas affected by clouds were removed from consideration. A light filter selected pixels greater than 4 standard deviations above the local background (a 100 x 100 pixel area). The selected lights were counted (counts) and divided by the number of times it would have been possible to detect the light (number of cloud-free coverages). The resulting percentage values (0-100) were examined for noise from aurora, bad scan lines, lightning, magnetic anomalies, etc. The remaining pixels were separated into bands for lights, fires, gas flares, and boats. DMSP data were collected by US Air Force Weather Agency. Source: http://www.unhabitat.org/Istanbul+5/6-9.pdf

RWBC interactive multimedia narratives

The RWBC development team is currently working on a number of interactive narratives that address interlocking problems of environment and development in the San Diego-Tijuana crossborder city-region. These narratives consist of video and motion graphic presentations with sound and voice narrations, close-captioning, and links to topics as the presentation progresses. Other features include:

- Versions in both Spanish and English (voice over and close-captioning)
- Capability to search RWBC resources via the narrative interface
