Project Abstract: What is the San Diego River? Traditionally disparate interests have come together to redefine the river and the future of its 440 square mile watershed. This project looks at the increasingly important role of the partnership between governmental entities and non-governmental groups in protecting natural and cultural resources, and the invaluable role that technology can have in enhancing management and public policy decision making resulting in public and environmental health improvements.
|
Project Goals: This project will take on an adaptive approach. The initial goals are
1. To identify the extent of citizen-based water and habitat quality monitoring and management efforts throughout the San Diego River watershed;
2. To quantify the value of these citizen-based efforts;
3. To identify potential technologies which could enhance the value of these efforts through the sharing of information and resources;
4. To identify gaps in current monitoring and management efforts and areas of public health concern;
5. To identify existing partnerships of governmental and non-government entities for resource monitoring and management;
6. To develop a one-stop web-based public education resource center to enhance public participation in monitoring and management efforts.
|
Research Priorities (and suggested topics for investigation): This project will be reviewed by the Project Committee of the San Diego River Coalition at is regular meetings.
